Ohio-Erie Canal and Lancaster Lateral Canal
A Brief History

The Ohio-Erie Canal was constructed between July, 1825 and January, 1848. This means of travel was designed to connect the Ohio River with Lake Erie and with eastern markets over the 1000 mile canal system.
The Ohio-Erie Canal in Fairfield County went from the Millersport reservoir (Buckeye Lake) to Canal Winchester with many changes in level accounting for the 18 locks between Buckeye Lake and Canal Winchester.
The Ohio-Erie Canal intersected the Lancaster Lateral Canal (later called the Hocking Canal near Canal St. in Carroll, Ohio.
