William and John Sherman
Lancaster, Ohio is the birthplace of General William Tecumseh Sherman and his famous brother, Senator John Sherman.
Sherman Statue
Due to strong southern sentiment, more than 100 years passed before a Sherman statue was unveiled on July 2, 2000 during Lancaster's bicentennial celebration. The statue was funded by public contributions raised through the efforts of William T. Sherman Memorial Committee. Designed by Mike Major, the life sized statue is located on Zane Square in the center of downtown Lancaster, Ohio at the corner of Main and Broad Streets.
Sherman Museum - Birthplace of General W.T. Sherman
The Sherman House Museum, birthplace of General William Tecumseh Sherman, his brother Senator John Sherman and many of his siblings is located in Lancaster, Ohio and is on the Civil War Discovery Trail. The museum is owned and operated by the Fairfield Heritage Association and is open Tuesday-Sunday 1-4 p.m.
Pictured on the left is the original back portion of the Sherman House which was affectionately known as the "little brown house on the hill". A later addition after the residency of the Sherman family added the familiar front facade.
